Blog Tour Review: Midnight and Mistletoe by Rebecca Raisin

So this is a really late blog post as it should have been up earlier but better late than never surely, and this is definitely one book worth waiting for! I’ve reviewed the other two books in the series, book 1 here and book 2 here, so it made perfect sense to review the 3rd and find out exactly how the story ends…….

Review: Ok, so as I’ve said this is book 3 in the series. They are all novellas so nice sizes if you don’t want a long read which is ideal for me just now as I’m having trouble finishing normal-length books.  While it is a series and ideally you want to read all of them in order to understand the background each book does wind up the story enough that you aren’t left hanging too much when it finishes and this one is no exception.  Because of the length of it I read it in a few hours, like I said ideal for me at the moment, and for those few hours I was whisked away from wet and windy Scotland to the thick snow and crisp fresh air of winter in Evergreen.  I may have never been there in real life but I have definitely visited through the story.  I could easily visualise the mountain view, the trees covered in snow and the feeling of being cold from being outside but the nice type of cold that comes with snowy days when the air is clear and the snow is fresh and white.

This story covers Christmas day and New Years Eve and the week in between so is ideal for this time of year.  Apart from the usual celebrations, Timothy (an ex-boyfriend from school) hires Clio and the lodge for a New Years Eve party that his boss wants to throw.  For some reason he does this on Boxing Day (26th Dec for those who don’t know it) which means Clio and the rest of the team have less than a week to organise everything.  Add to that some family dramas and a few other things and it’s definitely a hectic week for everyone.  As you can see from my rating I loved the story, it was Christmassy but not overly so and it was balanced just right.  I like romance and festivities but sometimes books and films go overboard and it gets a bit too much, like eating really, really sweet chocolate cake, but thankfully this book didn’t do that otherwise my review would have been quite different.

I love Rebecca’s books, the ones I’ve read have always lived up to my expectations and this one is no different.  It’s perfect for the stormy weather forecast for the next few days or for escaping from the festivities for a few hours in between Christmas and New Year.  I would suggest somewhere warm and cosy for reading, really comfy clothes (or pyjamas!) and something warm like hot chocolate or similar because it honestly is a cosy and warm book that just suits that sort of set up.  One thing you will definitely need though regardless of where and when you read it is tissues, do not forget the tissues!!

Review: I read the first part of this series and was looking forward to reading the rest of of the series and finding out what happened to Clio and the lodge.  While the first part introduced the characters the second part, for me, got more into the story and it whizzed along really nicely. Clio is finishing the organising of her bridal expo and hoping to entice lots of brides to book their weddings at the lodge and to use the local businesses for their flowers, cakes, etc.  The characters were well-written and realistic and I was whizzing through the pages wanting to find out what happened next and see how it turned out for the people involved.

While you need to read the first part to really understand the background to this part of the story this is a brilliant read and very appropriate for this time of year with snow and Christmas decorations everywhere. I really enjoyed this part and can’t wait for the next one to come out which I will be reading the minute I get my hands on it!

My Rating: 4.5/5

Review: I really enjoyed this book. This is a story of someone starting over, albeit somewhere familiar, after the life they had carefully built for themselves came crashing down around them. Clio Winters is clearly a hard working person who has vision and a lot of courage as not many people could attempt to do what she is doing.

The description of both the characters and setting here are very well done and bring the lodge to life quite clearly. It was heartwarming to watch everything progress and the characters friendship/work bonds grow as the story progresses.

I’m not a fan of books that have been split into 3 or 4 parts as I find the endings of each part can be quite abrupt which I don’t like. However, this is not like that. Going by this story, each novella is a story in itself though it also has unresolved questions and queries that will clearly continue into the next novella. This makes for a good read which you can enjoy and get a satisfactory pause before the next part is released.

I would highly recommend this to anyone who has read any of Rebecca’s previous books or enjoys books by authors such as Jenny Colgan, Lucy Diamond and Cathy Bramley. I can’t wait for the next two parts to be released!
