Having read and reviewed Holly’s previous two books; when the opportunity to review this one came up I couldn’t not put my name down for it. Many thanks to TeamBATC, for having me on the tour and sending me a copy of the book to review.
The Book:
Eve has always lived on Ennisfarne, an idyllic island just off the coast of Northumberland and only accessible when tides are low. There she runs a bar overlooking Darling Cove, a heavenly horseshoe-shaped beach named after her seafaring ancestors, whose links to the Farne Islands stretch back centuries.
Logan is a famous photographer desperate to evade the limelight after a difficult break-up. Renting a cottage from Eve, he chooses Ennisfarne in the hope of anonymity but is immediately spellbound by its natural beauty.
The pair don’t get off to the best start, butting heads over Eve’s adorable but boisterous Chocolate Labrador. But when Logan’s true identity is revealed, Eve realises her new tenant isn’t quite the man she thought he was. Is it too late to start again or will Logan’s island escape be over almost before it’s begun?
The Review: I loved this book. I love Northumberland, especially it’s coastline, and while I’ve not made it to Lindisfarne yet I am aware of the uniqueness of it and the tidal causeway you have to cross for access. Since Ennisfarne has a number of similarities to Lindisfarne, such as the tidal crossing it immediately felt slightly familiar to me. Having that slight feeling of familiarity made it easy for me to become absorbed in the story, at a time when I’ve had trouble settling in to any books.
I have to admit I wasn’t a fan of Logan to start with. He came across as a bit prickly and while some of it was understandable, the rest wasn’t. However, happily, my opinion of him improved as the story progressed. Eve I liked from the start, she’s someone who doesn’t take nonsense from anyone and I liked that about her. Sometimes however, both characters were simply outshone by Huxley, Eve’s dog, who is a handful but also quite delightful.
This was a beautiful story about friendship, community and why sometimes it pays to take time out and re-assess your life in the face of unexpected change. The community of Ennisfarne were wonderful and reading the book made me feel as if I was part of that community as well. This book was a joy to read, it made me feel warm and cosy and it was lovely to watch Logan’s appreciation of the island and its people change over the course of the story.
This is another cracker from Holly Hepburn, and I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next.
