The Review: I’ve read the first few books in this series and enjoyed them so I couldn’t resist the opportunity to read this newest one. I really enjoyed this book. A lot has changed in Tuva’s life since the last book I read but even with this it was still nice to be spending time with her again.
All of the elements I enjoyed in the previous books were present in this one. The descriptions of the towns and surrounding areas, the investigation work that Tuva does, and the way the characters are written. The characterisation makes everyone in the book come to life. The tension and feeling of threat that comes from the characters at Rose Farm is palpable and draws you further into the story itself. The investigation work that Tuva does is detailed as always and it’s interesting to see the way things link together as the story progresses. This story also explores something different, that I’ve not found in other books and it was good to get that perspective and see how it different it is from the conventional life that most people live.
The way this story is written is brilliant. The more I read, the more it drew me in until I was hooked. I became completely engrossed and caught up in what Tuva was doing, feeling concerned and worried for her at various points in the book. The setting itself became a character in its own right and that also affected how I felt reading the book. In addition to the missing person and investigation there was also the isolation in various place, the remoteness and lack of people depending on the time of day.
If you’re yet to discover these fabulous books then you are definitely missing out. I would recommend starting at the beginning though, with Dark Pine. If you’re already a fan of the series, then you are in for a treat with this one.
Definitely one to be enjoyed snuggled somewhere warm and safe, with a hot drink!
The Author:
Will Dean lives in the middle of a vast elk forest in Sweden, where the Tuva Moodyson novels are set. He grew up in the East Midlands. After studying Law at the LSE, and working in London, he settled in rural Sweden and built a wooden house in a boggy clearing, where he lives with his wife and son, and it’s from this base that he reads and writes. Will Dean is the author of Dark Pines, Red Snow, Black River and Bad Apples in the Tuva Moodyson series.
His debut novel in the series, Dark Pines, was selected for Zoe Ball’s Book Club and shortlisted for the Guardian Not the Booker prize. The second, Red Snow, won Best Independent Voice at the Amazon Publishing Readers’ Awards and was longlisted for the Theakston’s Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year 2020, as was his third novel, Black River. The series is in development for television. Will is also the author of two stand-alone novels, The Last Thing to Burn, shortlisted for the Theakston’s Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year 2022, and First Born, both published by Hodder.
