#BlogTour #Review : Requiem in La Rossa by Tom Benjamin. @Tombenjaminsays @RandomTTours @LittleBrownUK

Today I’m taking part in the blog tour for the latest book in the Daniel Leicester series. Many thanks to Random Things Tours for having me on the tour and sending me a copy of the book to review.

The Book:

In the sweltering heat of a Bologna summer, a murderer plans their pièce de résistance…

Only in Bologna reads the headline in the Carlino after a professor of music is apparently murdered leaving the opera. But what looks like an open-and-shut case begins to fall apart when English detective Daniel Leicester is tasked with getting the accused man off, and a trail that begins among Bologna’s close-knit classical music community leads him to suspect there may be a serial killer at large in the oldest university in the world.

The Review: This is the third book in the series starring Daniel Leicester as a private investigator living and working in Bologna, Italy. This one is set during a sweltering summer in the city, just as most people are preparing to depart for the cooler areas of the country to escape the heat. A music professor is murdered at the opera and it seems to be quite straightforward until Daniel is asked to investigate further.

The investigation turns up possible motives for murder and whatever started at the opera appears to just be the beginning. This is a story which has good, solid detective work at its heart. There are lots of parts to it, dead ends and unexpected detours but what it is primarily is someone investigating, following leads and trying to uncover the truth in what is clearly a bigger puzzle than first appears.

Because it’s Italy, we also get the culture of the city flowing through the story. There’s the heat of the summer, the gatherings of people, the food and of course the coffee. Added in to this a mystery surrounding Daniel’s family’s past and you get a really good story with depth and detail.

I really enjoyed this book and now need to go back and read book 2 which I’ve missed. This is a series which started off strong and is getting better. I can easily see this series becoming a favourite of mine.

The Author:

Tom Benjamin grew up in the suburbs of north London and began his working life as a journalist before becoming a spokesman for Scotland Yard. He later moved into public health, where he led drugs awareness programme FRANK. He now lives in Bologna.
